Our tropical island resort is an excellent base for those wishing to dive at some truly world-class locations. Surin National Marine Park is usually open from 15 November until 30 April, thus this is the diving season at our resort.
Koh Phra Thong is the closest landfall point to the world famous Richelieu Rock, a submerged rock about 18 km (11 miles) east of the Surin Islands. Richelieu Rock is a fantastic dive site, surrounded by deep ocean, it acts rather like an oasis harboring a vast array of fish and corals. Richelieu Rock can be a challenging site for divers. Although not dangerous, there are depths to 35m and occasional currents. It is therefore not suitable for snorkelers or novice divers.
Marine life seen at Richelieu Rock includes manta rays, seahorses, pipefish, octopus and cuttlefish. It is also a world-renowned site for whale sharks! Swimming with such a large animal, up to 12m long, has to be a high point for any diver. Sightings cannot be guaranteed but generally February to April is considered whale shark season. Manta ray sightings are more common.
The Surin Islands also offer good diving opportunities. The islands are famous for their hard corals & fringing reefs suitable for divers & snorkelers. Turtles & reef sharks are also occasionally seen around the Surin Islands. In 2010 a manta ray was seen breaching the surface right in front of the dive boat.
Koh Tachai is the most northerly island in Similans National Park. Tachai is visible from Golden Buddha Resort on a clear day. There is an abundance of reef fish that can be viewed by divers and snorkelers. The beautiful white sands & turquoise waters are idyllic.
The Similan Islands & Koh Bon are further south. Day trips or liveaboards from Khao Lak can be arranged through Blue Guru before or after your stay at Golden Buddha.
