Exterior Design: Traditional Thai Lanna stilt house with open, uncovered veranda and crow's nest/ lookout perch. Liberal use of indigenous natural woods. Interior Layout: 1 Bedroom; 1 Bath: Combination living and sleeping area. Location: About 4 minutes to the clubhouse and 50 meters to the beach. Description: The term "Lanna" can be used to describe both the northern Thai culture and its sophisticated and refined design. From its dark stained teak interior walls to the sharp sloping roofline, Baan Taotanu is a Lanna house in the very best sense of the tradition. Aside from the unique Lanna architecture, the first thing you notice about Baan Taotanu is the vast elevated veranda that is equal in size to the interior living area. The most striking feature in the middle of this open, uncovered area is the crow's nest or lookout perch. Accessible only by an attached ladder, this playful covered sitting area is reminiscent of a tree house. Great ocean views and cool sea breezes may make this your favorite spot for relaxing with a cool tropical drink, a good book, or an afternoon nap. The entire front of the house is made of louvered glass doors which open up to the interior. Floor to ceiling panels of dark stained wood create an elegant, yet welcoming ambiance. Centered against the back wall is the king size bed with matching wooden head and footboards. A minimalist approach is taken to other furnishings to maximize the interior space. The bathroom, accessible from both the bedroom and veranda, also incorporates Lanna tradition. The stylized circular sink, reminiscent of a wash basin, rests on a wooden vanity. Black stone floors accompanied by unadorned walls complete the design. A simple shower and western style toilet are the only modern amenities in this classic bathroom. Recommendations: A unique characteristic of Lanna design are the “step up” doorways. Rather than being flush with the floor, a board is positioned at the bottom of the doorway. This requires one to literally step up and over to get inside the dwelling. This is truly part of the tradition and charm, but could prove difficult for young children or some seniors. Although guard rails are positioned all around the veranda, the elevated design and temptation to climb up into the tree house may make this house unsuitable for young children. Baan Taotanu is a good choice year round, because it is set slightly back from the beachfront. Its location and closing glass doors makes it better protected from the elements during the rain and high winds of the monsoon season.
