Baan Lucy’s design is both simple and elegant; practical yet stylish. Traditional local building materials like the thatching for the roof contrast with the intricate woodcarvings found throughout the house. The liberal use of indigenous wood, both polished and with natural matte finish, add to Baan Lucy’s complexity.
The house, along with its nearby neighbour Baan Robin, is built among a patch of Rak Taley trees, which were integrated into the design of the plot. As such, Baan Lucy exemplifies what Golden Buddha Beach Resort is all about. Stairs lead up from the garden to Baan Lucy’s ocean facing veranda. The roofline extends over the spacious terrace completely protecting it from the elements, and providing a good measure of shade. The front and two sides remain open to procure great sea views, and a unique bench, made from long single wooden boards, forms the railing.
Inside Baan Lucy is warm and welcoming. Shelving displays local handcrafts, art adorns the walls, and long polished planks of hardwood make up the floors. Shuttered windows on all sides can be closed for privacy or completely opened up to allow the tropical sea breeze to waft through the house. The master bedroom benefits from a spacious en-suite bathroom. Here large cuts of stone are liberally used throughout making up the walls, floor, shower, and sink counter. This is paired with more natural hardwood for parts of the floor and the vanity unit. A western style toilet completes the spacious and well-appointed bathroom.
The singularity of Baan Lucy is a large private sala connected to the main building by a wooden bridge. The sala can be used as a second living room or bedroom, it is also a great place to meditate, practice yoga, relax with a good book or just watch the sunset over the Andaman Sea. The sitting area can be turned into three single beds. There is a second bathroom with toilet accessible on the lower level, which can be used by guests sleeping in the attached sala, or for anyone coming back from the beach.
With its two separate buildings, Baan Lucy provides very flexible accommodation, equally suitable to a couple or a young family. The adjoining sala can be reserved as a yoga/meditation space or turned into a second bedroom for up to three children.
